They continued their clockwise tour of Bluewater’s lower level, Susan hanging proudly onto her colourful Office carrier bag with her new shoes inside. Having made one purchase, she continued to stop and peruse shop displays, the night was young yet.

“Do you take pleasure in embarrassing me in front of people?” Martin asked, as they stood in front of a travel agent’s window, where Susan recounted some of the holidays that she’d had with the girls.

“It’s fun to see you squirm; you look so cute.”

“That may be so but telling that shoe shop woman that I was your sugar daddy, well, it just made me feel cheap.”

Susan turned away from the pictures of sun-drenched beaches and brushed an imaginary piece of fluff from the shoulder of his jacket. “Come on, it’s a laugh. We’ll most likely never see her again, it does no harm. Plus, I would say when she gets home, we’ll be one of the topics of the day as she tells her family about all the peculiar customers she has put up with. Didn’t you ever wave to random strangers from the top of a bus leaving them wondering, ‘do I know that person?’ You need to loosen that Crockett and Jones tie of yours.”

“They make shoes,” he corrected her, as she moved onto the next retail unit.

“Now that is a party dress,” Susan stated as she looked at a very skimpy plain red dress, that apart from being short, had a plunging back.

“I’m sure you would look wonderful in anything,” Martin responded, hoping that she was not planning on going inside and trying it on. He knew from bitter experience with Jenny that deciding on a dress is a lot more complex and time consuming than trying on a pair of shoes.

“Hello, you is Paul’s mates.”

They turned in unison to see just who had recognised them. He was taller than either of them and twice the width of Susan. His smile was boyish and coy. He wore a well-worn black leather jacket together with dilapidated jeans which could easily be mistaken for highly fashionable distressed ones. Neither Susan nor Martin could see the motif on the back of his jacket, but passers-by could as they stared at the young man. ‘Hells Angel Chapter’ written around a skull, encouraged shoppers to give him a wide berth, while hoping he was not giving grief to the respectable couple he was talking to. Even if he was doing so, they gave just a brisk glance before continuing with their shopping.

Martin recognised him at once, well to be precise, he noticed the bald, tattooed head. He took one step back and bumped into the glass of the shop. Susan smiled.

“You’re from the club in Deptford. Fancy seeing you all the way over here, never took you as an avid shopper.”

“Nah, can’t afford to shop in this posh place,” he laughed, reminding Susan of her young niece.

Martin guessed that if he wasn’t shopping then he was perhaps shoplifting, that seemed like a feasible explanation.
